Showcases and groups

How to organize products into showcases and groups in the student area. Creating, sorting, publishing, appearance, access and the navigation model.

A showcase is a shelf in the student area. It is where products appear, for example "My courses" or "Bonus". A group is a showcase that holds other showcases. You create both in Content → Products.

How it works

The Content → Products screen shows the whole tree: the showcases and, inside each one, the products.

  • A showcase holds products.
  • A group is a top-level showcase that holds other showcases. Those showcases are called subshowcases.

The tree stops there. A group does not go inside another group. A subshowcase does not become a group. See the full picture in How content is organized.

The most important rule: a showcase organizes what the student sees. It gives access in one case only: when a delivery includes the whole showcase or the whole group. Then all its products are included, with the access time the delivery sets. A product you put in that showcase later is also included. A product you take out leaves. See Deliveries.

What the showcase opens

You choose under What do students find when opening this showcase?:

DestinationWhat the student finds
Showcase productsIts products. This is the default.
External linkAnother page, at the address you enter. The showcase has no products.
Embedded pageA page of yours, inside the student area.
Other showcasesThe showcase becomes a group and holds subshowcases.

The statuses

Every new showcase starts as a draft. The status sits in the badge on the row. When editing, it is under Showcase visibility.

StatusWhat it does
DraftVisible to administrators only. The showcase disappears from the student area, with the published products inside it.
PublishedShown to students. Each product follows its own access rules.
UnlistedShown only to students who have access to at least one product in it.
HiddenNot shown in any showcase, not even in the administrator preview. Use it for a path you place yourself: a menu item, a banner or a link in a message.

Heads up: this is where most mistakes happen. Carla publishes the course, but its showcase is in draft. Result: the course disappears for every student. A draft hides the showcase, not the product's own address. A student who already has the product and opens its address still gets in. If a published course disappeared for everyone, check the showcase and then the group.

The two navigation models

The student area has two navigation models: Educational Model and Cademi Model. The Cademi Model is the streaming layout. You choose in Settings → Student area, under Navigation model.

In the streaming layout, top-level showcases are the rows of the home page. They have no page of their own. That is why the student menu only points to a showcase that sits inside a group or that opens an embedded page.

Some appearance options exist in one model only. This article says which.

Step by step

Create a showcase

  1. Open Content → Products.
  2. Click New showcase.
  3. Fill in Showcase name.
  4. Click Create.

The showcase starts as a draft, at the end of the list.

Turn a showcase into a group

Only an empty showcase can become a group.

  1. In the showcase's ... menu, click Edit.
  2. Open the Configuration tab.
  3. Under What do students find when opening this showcase?, choose Other showcases.
  4. Click Save Changes.
  5. Inside the group, click New subshowcase for each inner showcase.

If the showcase already has products, the screen warns This showcase already has products. It offers Create showcase group: the group appears right above it. Then drag the showcase inside.

Sort

  • Drag the showcase by its handle.
  • On top-level showcases, you can also use the Move up and Move down arrows.
  • Drag a product to change its order or to move it to another showcase.
  • Drag a showcase into a group, or back to the top level.

With a search or a filter applied, the list does not change order. Clear both first.

Configure the appearance

In the ... menu, click Edit and open the Appearance tab.

  • Showcase icon: an SVG file next to the name. Top-level showcase only.
  • Showcase image: in a subshowcase, the thumbnail shown in the group. JPG or PNG, up to 1 MB.
  • Showcase title: the name above the product grid. Educational Model only.
  • Products per row: 3 or 4. Educational Model only.
  • Content shown with one product: what the showcase lists: Lessons, Modules or Products. Cademi Model only. If the showcase has a single blog product with taxonomies, they also show up as options.
  • Thumbnail format: Automatic, Do not resize, 16:9, 4:4, 4:5 or 4:7.
  • Thumbnail titles: the name below each thumbnail.
  • Automatic rotation: the carousel moves on its own and stops when the student uses it. Cademi Model only.

Configure access

In the ... menu, click Edit and open the Access tab. A group does not have this tab.

  • Products with and without access: Together or Separated into two lists. When separated, each list has a title: Title for products with access and Title for products without access. Educational Model only.
  • Lock on products without access.
  • Thumbnail indicators: the access and deadline indicators over the thumbnails.
  • Thumbnails for products without access: In color or Black and white. This does not change access.
  • Remaining access time: the time left, on the thumbnail of products with an end date.

A subshowcase that lists products has one more field, on the Configuration tab: Offer page for students without access. It is where a student goes when they have none of that showcase's products. That way they do not see an empty showcase.

Duplicate and delete

  • ... → Duplicate copies the showcase with its products. The copy's name ends in "(copy at", with the time and the date. The copy starts as a draft.
  • ... → Delete sends the showcase to the trash, with its subshowcases and products.

To bring it back, open the Trash in the corner of the screen and click Restore.

Good to know

Search and filters.

The search at the top finds showcases and products by name. The Status, Features and Issues filters apply to products. The Replica filter appears when there are items with the Replica badge. A showcase shows up if at least one product inside it matches.

Collapsed list.

With more than six showcases, the list starts collapsed. Expand all and Collapse all open and close them all.

Unlisted group.

It follows the unlisted showcase rule: it is shown to whoever has a product inside it.

Enrollments are kept.

Deleting a showcase does not remove enrollments or progress from the products that go to the trash with it. Restoring puts everything back.

Everything starts as a draft.

Showcases, products, modules and lessons start as drafts. Publishing the showcase does not publish its products. Each one has its own status. See Products and formats.

Frequently asked questions

Can the showcase list modules or lessons instead of products?

Yes, in the Cademi Model, under Content shown with one product. In the Educational Model, the showcase lists products.

I want a showcase only for buyers, with no lock for everyone else.

Set the showcase to Unlisted. It is shown only to students who have one of its products. Hidden will not do: it disappears for everyone, buyers included.

I published the course and nobody sees it.

Check that its showcase and its group are published. A showcase in draft hides its products.
