Modules and lessons
How to build a product's modules and lessons: creating, sorting and publishing, the lesson editor, the supported video players and what completes a lesson.
Inside a product, content sits in modules, and each module holds lessons. For example: the module "Formulas" holds the lesson "How to use VLOOKUP". You build everything on the product's Lessons screen. Each lesson has its own editing screen.
How it works
- A module is a chapter of the product. It holds lessons.
- A module can hold Submodules instead of lessons. Then the lessons sit in the submodules. There is no third level.
- A lesson is the part the student watches or reads.
The most important rule: in a course or a series, every lesson sits in a module. A lesson outside a module is not shown and does not count toward progress. In a blog, lessons are loose, without modules, and they count.
More details:
- In a product with modules, a module is of the Module or Bonus type. The type only changes the presentation.
- Modules and lessons have two statuses: Published and Draft.
- A module in draft hides its lessons, even the published ones.
- A lesson in draft stays out and does not count toward progress.

Lesson formats
You choose on the lesson screen, under Format:
| Format | What it is |
|---|---|
| Default | Video, text and files. Comments and questions live here. |
| Exam | One of the product's exams, shown in this lesson. Finishing the attempt completes the lesson, even when the student fails. See Exams. |
| Live | A live stream in the lesson, full width, without the regular player. Under Platform: YouTube, Vimeo or Zoom. Zoom needs its integration turned on in Settings → Integrations → Zoom. |
What completes a lesson
| How | When |
|---|---|
| The student clicks Mark as seen | The usual path. They can unmark it later. |
| The lesson marks itself after some time on the page | Always, in a lesson that is not an exam. The time is the Automatic marking time, in Settings → Lesson page. |
| An exam attempt ends | When the student submits every question, or when the time runs out. |
Video players
Cademí does not store the video file. The lesson stores the link of a player. The screen recognizes links from these players:
- AppPlayer, Adilo, Builderall, Bunny, Dyntube, Eplay, Gumlet, Host VSL, Hotmart and Instagram;
- JW Player, Killerplayer, Loom, Panda Video, SafeVideo, Screencastmatic, Smartplayer, Spotify, Spotlightr and Streamyard;
- TED, Vadoo, VdoCipher, Videofront, Vidyard, Vimeo, Voomly, Vturb, Wistia and YouTube.
Paste the full link under Video.
Heads up: this is where most mistakes happen. Paulo pastes a link from a player that is not on the list. The screen saves it without a warning. Result: the student sees URL not identified in place of the video. After you paste the link, open Preview and check that the video plays.
Materials
Materials live in the body of the lesson, through the editor:
- The File and Multiple Files blocks upload files.
- The Image block uploads an image.
Removing a file from the lesson does not delete it from the account.
Step by step
Create a module
- Open the product in Content → Products. The Lessons screen opens.
- Click New module.
- Fill in the Name.
- Under Type, choose Module or Bonus.
- Click Create.
Create a lesson
- Inside the module, click Add lesson.
- Fill in Lesson title.
- Click Create.
Modules and lessons start as drafts. In a blog, the button is New lesson, in the product header.
Create submodules
Only a module without lessons can start to hold submodules. If it already has lessons, the screen warns This module already has lessons.
- In the module's ... menu, click Edit.
- Under Module content, choose Submodules.
- Save.
- Click Add submodule.
Sort and move
- Drag modules and lessons by their handle.
- On modules, you can also use the Move up and Move down arrows.
- Drag a lesson to another module, if you want.
- ... → Move to another product takes the module, with its submodules and lessons, to the Destination product.
Heads up: when you move a module to another product, the students' progress in that module is lost.
In a blog, manual order only applies with Sort by set to Sequential, in Settings → Product page. Otherwise, the list follows the date and cannot be dragged.
Edit the lesson
Click the lesson to open its screen.
- Title. Next to it, Link to existing content. See Connected lessons, copies and shortcuts.
- Video: the player's full link.
- The text editor. Write, and use / to add blocks:
- for text: Text, Heading, List, Checklist, Table, Quote, Warning and Delimiter;
- for files and media: Image, File, Multiple Files and Embed Media;
- for code: Show code and Insert HTML.
- In the right column:
- Format;
- Exam, in the Exam format;
- Comments and Questions, in the Default format;
- Publish date;
- in a blog, the classification in taxonomies;
- Summary;
- Thumbnail, in JPG or PNG up to 600 KB.
The screen saves on its own every few seconds. The bar at the bottom shows what is not saved yet. Preview opens the lesson as the student sees it. Create new lesson creates the next one in the same module.
Publish
- Click the lesson's or module's Draft badge and choose Published.
- On a module, Publish All publishes the module and its lessons.
- On the product, Publish All publishes everything.
Duplicate and delete
- ... → Duplicate on a lesson creates a copy in the same module. The title ends in "(Copy)".
- ... → Duplicate on a module also copies its submodules and lessons.
- Copies start as drafts.
- ... → Delete sends the item to the product's trash.
To bring it back, open the Trash in the corner of the Lessons screen and click Restore. A lesson deleted together with its module comes back with it.
Good to know
Module thumbnail.
It is the image next to the name. It only exists in the Cademi Model, where the showcase can list modules.
Student progress.
Publishing a new lesson makes the progress percentage drop, because the total grew. Putting a lesson in draft, or deleting it, makes the percentage rise.
Lessons without comments.
Comments and questions are not shown in an exam lesson or in a live lesson.
Deleting a source lesson.
You cannot delete a lesson that is the source of connected lessons. Disconnect those lessons first.
Video thumbnail.
Some hosting services do not send the video thumbnail. To get a cover, upload the lesson's Thumbnail by hand.
Frequently asked questions
The student watched the video and the lesson was not completed.
The lesson completes when the student clicks Mark as seen, or through automatic marking, after the Automatic marking time. If they left the page before that without marking it, the lesson stays pending.
Can I upload the video file straight into the lesson?
No. Cademí does not store video. Upload the video to one of the listed players and paste the link under Video.
I moved the module to another product and the students' progress is gone.
That is the effect of Move to another product. Progress belongs to the product, and the module arrives empty at its destination.
I cannot add a lesson to a module.
That module holds submodules. Add the lesson to one of its submodules.

Connected lessons, copies and shortcuts
Three ways to reuse content: copying, connecting a lesson to another and creating a shortcut. What changes when you edit the source and what students see.
