Content protection
Put the student's name on lesson PDFs and on YouTube, Panda Video, VdoCipher and Videofront videos. If the material leaks, you know who passed it on.
Content protection puts the student's name on the material they open. For example: Ana downloads the PDF handout, and the PDF comes with her name and document. If the handout shows up in a group, you know where it came from.
The most important rule: the watermark does not stop copying. It does not block downloads, screenshots or screen recording. It shows who copied, and so it discourages sharing.
How it works
The screen is in Settings → Security → Content protection. This kind of protection is also called social DRM. The screen has two tabs:
| Tab | What it protects |
|---|---|
| Document Protection | The PDFs attached to lessons |
| Video Protection | Lesson videos on YouTube, Panda Video, VdoCipher and Videofront. Each player has its own block |
The two tabs are one form. Change what you want on both. Then click Save now once, in the bar that appears at the bottom.
The protection applies from the next time the student opens the file or the video. What they already downloaded does not change.
Document Protection
Show watermark on documents stamps the student's name and document on every PDF they download in the student area. If the student has no document on file, the watermark uses their email.
Which files get the watermark:
- PDFs attached to lesson content, through the editor's file blocks;
- PDFs attached to acceptance terms;
- PDFs attached to the FAQ.
Images, spreadsheets and other formats are delivered as uploaded. The watermark stays on until someone turns it off.
The watermark's look
With the watermark on, the Customization block changes its look:
| Field | Options |
|---|---|
| Text color | Any color. If you never changed it, it is red |
| Background color | The color of the band behind the text. If you never changed it, it is white |
| Opacity | 100%, 75%, 50% or 25% |
| Position | Top, Bottom, Right or Left of the page |
Each click makes a new PDF
Each click on the file makes a new PDF, with the details of whoever clicked. That PDF's address expires within minutes. So a link that is copied and passed on stops opening.
Video Protection
Cademí does not host video. Each lesson stores the link of a player (Modules and lessons). So video protection depends on the player. Each player has its own block, and each block only changes lessons with a video from that player.
YouTube
Show identification on videos replaces the YouTube player with a custom Cademí player. In a corner of the video, this player shows a "Licensed for" badge with the student's name and document (or email). In Position, choose Top left or Top right.
Attention: this is where most mistakes happen. The custom player has fewer controls than YouTube's:
- It has: play and pause, back and forward 10 seconds, a progress bar, volume and fullscreen.
- It does not have: playback speed, captions or quality selection.
- When the student pauses, the picture goes black. This way, YouTube's suggestions of other videos do not show.
Before you turn it on, check whether your students use captions or watch at a faster speed.
Panda Video
Show watermark on videos asks Panda Video to show the student's name and document (or email) over the video.
The watermark is a feature of Panda Video itself. Set it up there first.
- In the Panda Video dashboard, turn on the DRM (watermark) feature.
- Still in Panda Video, put the videos you want to protect in a group.
- In that group's settings, copy the group ID and the secret key.
- In Cademí, turn on Show watermark on videos.
- Under Integration credentials, paste the ID in Group ID.
- Paste the secret key in API Secret.
- Click Save now.
Without both fields, the screen does not save with the watermark on.
The watermark does not show when you open the lesson from the dashboard, without a student. Only a signed-in student has details to put on the watermark. The details of the feature belong to Panda Video: plans, style and when the watermark appears.
VdoCipher
VdoCipher works with or without the integration:
- Without the integration, the video plays through the link or the embed code. No one is identified.
- With the integration, Cademí asks VdoCipher for an authorization for each student, at each play. VdoCipher records who watched each video.
To turn on the integration:
- Turn on Enable API integration.
- In API Secret, paste the API key from your VdoCipher dashboard.
- Under Integration features, turn on the optional ones you want (see below).
- Click Save now.
Without the API Secret, the screen does not save with the integration on.
The optional features:
- Show watermark on videos: the student's name and document (or email) appear over the video. The watermark moves around from time to time.
- Restrict playback to your domain: the video does not play when someone embeds it outside your members area.
Videofront
Show watermark on videos sends the student's name and document (or email) to the Videofront player. Videofront uses these details to identify the student.
- Turn on Show watermark on videos.
- In Integration token, paste the API token from your Videofront dashboard.
- Click Save now.
Without the token, the screen does not save with the watermark on.
When to use it
| Situation | What to turn on |
|---|---|
| PDF handouts and materials circulate in groups | Show watermark on documents |
| YouTube lessons are passed around | Show identification on videos, if students do not need captions and speed |
| Lessons on Panda Video, VdoCipher or Videofront | The watermark in that player's block |
| A high-value course at risk of piracy | The watermark on PDFs and videos, with a player that has its own watermark |
The watermark does not replace the device limit (Authentication). The limit discourages lending the password. The watermark discourages passing the material on. Use both together.
Good to know
No protection prevents a screenshot or a screen recording.
The watermark makes sure the copy carries the identity of whoever made it.
The watermark uses the registration details.
If the student did not fill in their name or document, the watermark uses what exists. Without a document, it uses the email. To require the document on free sign-up, see Student settings.
Very long PDFs may come out without a watermark.
The service that stamps PDFs has a page limit. If your account needs to stamp larger files, contact Cademí support.
Who opens this screen.
Only administrators with permission to view the account settings, because the screen holds the players' keys (Administrators).
Frequently asked questions
Does the watermark stop the student from downloading the PDF?
No. The student downloads it as usual. The file comes with their name and document.
I turned on the watermark in Panda Video. Why does it not show?
Check that the video is in the DRM group whose ID you pasted. Also check that the feature is active in your Panda Video account. Also remember: from the dashboard, you see the lesson without a student and without a watermark. To check, enter as a student.
Why can't the student turn on captions on the YouTube video?
With Show identification on videos on, the custom player has no captions or speed control. If students need those features, turn off the YouTube identification.
Authentication
The rules for signing in to the platform: strong passwords, the initial password for students, reCAPTCHA on sign-up, Google sign-in and the device limit.
Gamification
Points and ranking in the student area: which actions earn points and how many, how the ranking looks, what removes points and how to adjust them by hand.
