Comments

How to moderate lesson comments: approve, hide, reply, pin and delete. With review before publishing and what the student sees.

Comments are the open conversation below each lesson. Students comment and reply to each other. Your team moderates and replies from the Support → Comments inbox.

The idea in one minute

A comment is a one-level conversation: the original comment and the replies to it. Students and your team can comment and reply.

Your team decides where each comment is, with two actions:

  • Approve: the comment shows on the lesson for every student.
  • Hide: the comment leaves the lesson. Only the author and your team still see it.

Your team does not rewrite what a student wrote. To take a comment off the lesson, hide or delete it. The team's own replies can be corrected.

The most important rule: replying does not approve. Only approving and hiding change where the comment is.

Review first or publish right away

In Settings → Support → Comments, the Review comments before publishing switch has two options:

  • Review before publishing: a new student comment waits in Awaiting approval. A new student reply waits too. They only show on the lesson after someone approves them.
  • Publish immediately: the comment shows on the lesson right away.

The path of a new student comment looks like this:

Carregando diagrama…

Hiding works in both modes. The comment disappears for the other students. The author keeps seeing what they wrote, and your team sees everything.

Heads up: this is where most mistakes happen. Turning review off publishes at once every student comment and reply that was awaiting approval, across the whole account. Hidden ones stay hidden. Go through the queue before you turn it off.

The team's reply sits with the comment. The comment stays in the queue until you approve or hide it.

The protections against spam

Under Comment protections, besides review:

  • Minimum characters: the minimum length of a student comment. It is 10 until you set another number.
  • Interval between comments: how many minutes a student waits between one comment and the next. The count starts at their last comment, on any lesson of the account. Empty means no wait.

Your team does not follow the minimum or the interval. Repeating the same text counts as a new comment. The controls against spam are the interval and moderation.

What the student sees on the channel

Under Comment settings:

  • Channel name: the name of the tab on the lesson and in the student area menu. Empty, it stays Comments.
  • Comment field text: the hint inside the empty field. Empty, it stays Leave your comment.
  • Show student tags, with Show only to admins: shows the author's tags in the inbox's Details panel. Students never see tags.
  • Sort by: Newest first or Oldest first. It is the order of your queue, not of the lesson.
  • Open in a new tab: each row in the queue opens the conversation in a new browser tab.

The comments inbox

Support → Comments has three panels: the list, the conversation and the details.

The list.

  • The search is called Search comment.
  • The filters are Status (Awaiting approval, Approved, Hidden), Product and Module. The Module filter appears after you pick a product.
  • With review on, the inbox opens on Awaiting approval. Without review, it opens with everything.
  • Each row shows the student, when they wrote and an excerpt. An arrow before the excerpt marks a reply, not an original comment.
  • The row has the Approve, Hide and Delete buttons. Only Delete asks for confirmation.
  • On a phone, swipe the row to moderate.

The conversation.

  • It shows the lesson title, the product, the whole conversation and, at the bottom, the reply field.
  • A click on a student bubble puts that comment in focus. The actions in the Details panel apply to it.
  • A student bubble has a menu: Approve comment, Hide comment, View profile, View comments (the inbox filtered by that student) and Delete.
  • The bubble of one of your replies has Edit reply and Delete reply.
  • With nothing selected, the panel shows Open quick actions and How does it work?.

The details.

  • The Student: name, View profile and the tags, if you turned them on.
  • The Comment or Reply block: Status, Opened on, Product, Module and Class. The lesson link opens the lesson as the student sees it, in another tab.
  • The Actions: View student profile, Pin or Unpin, Approve comment, Hide comment and Delete.

Quick interaction. The Open quick actions button opens the current queue in a window. Each row has the approve, hide, delete and open buttons. Use it to moderate in sequence, without opening one conversation at a time.

Step by step

Moderate a comment

  1. Open Support → Comments.
  2. On the comment's row, click Approve or Hide.

With review on, the queue already shows what is awaiting approval. To read the whole conversation first, click the row and decide in Details. With the queue filtered by status, the row leaves the list as soon as you decide.

Delete a comment

  1. Click Delete, on the row or in Details.
  2. Confirm in Delete comment.

Reply to a comment

  1. Click the row to open the conversation.
  2. Write in the field at the bottom.
  3. Send.

The reply goes to the end of the conversation, under your name. It applies to the whole conversation, whichever bubble is in focus. If the comment is still awaiting approval, approve it in Details: Replying does not approve or hide the comment.

Correct or withdraw a reply of yours

In the menu of your reply's bubble:

  • Edit reply opens the text for correction. The student gets no new alert, and the reply keeps its original date.
  • Delete reply takes only your reply down. The student's comment stays.

Pin a comment to the top of the lesson

  1. Open the conversation.
  2. In Details, click Pin.

The conversation's original comment goes to the top of the lesson. Unpin undoes it. Pinning from a reply pins the whole conversation. A pinned comment still follows the rules of who sees what: pinned and awaiting approval, it does not show to the other students.

What the student sees

  • Below the lesson: the tab with the Channel name. Inside it, the field with the Comment field text.
  • They comment, reply to a comment and delete their own comments.
  • With review on, their comment shows to them right away. To the other students, only after approval.
  • On every reply from your team to their comment, they get a notice in the student area. Correcting the reply does not notify again. Deleting the reply removes the notice. There is no email with the reply text.
  • With Comments turned off in their form, they do not see the channel. Their access to the content continues.

Good to know

Deleting a comment deletes its replies.

This applies to everyone, including whoever wrote them. It cannot be undone. Deleting only your reply keeps the rest.

The points stay.

Hiding or deleting a comment does not remove the points the student earned with it. To slow down someone piling up points with short comments, use the minimum characters, the interval and review.

Scope by product.

An administrator limited to some products sees only the comments from those products.

Student view.

In it, a comment of yours goes out under your administrator name and shows right away.

Shortcut from the student profile.

In the student's profile, the Support block leads to the inbox filtered by that student. The Filtering by chip shows the filter, and Clear student filter removes it.
